Webinar | Policing the Online Market for Drugs with Maltego

Despite several enforcement successes in curbing the dark web drug trade, such as the takedowns of Silk Road (2013), Hydra (2022), and Operation SpecTor (2023), which removed significant volumes of illicit drugs from circulation, the online drug market continues to evolve.

Dark web administrators and vendors have shifted to smaller, more hidden platforms. Some individual dealers now operate their own mini-market sites to avoid detection, while large-scale wholesale transactions have become more common. Although dark web drug sales appear to have declined in recent years, likely following a previous upward trend, the retail-level market has simply moved elsewhere, particularly to social media platforms and encrypted messaging apps.

This migration is alarming. The internet and social media have become a one-stop shop where users can market, sell, buy, and even arrange delivery of increasingly dangerous substances. With just a few clicks, users—especially younger, more vulnerable ones—can access deadly drugs more easily than ever.

The use of darknet browsers, end-to-end encrypted messaging apps, and cryptocurrencies significantly complicates law enforcement investigations. However, these spaces continue to cause real-world harm to families, communities, and society at large. With the right tools and intelligence, law enforcement agencies can identify marketplaces, trace administrators and vendors, and even dismantle organized crime networks such as drug cartels.

Watch the webinar recording featuring Keven Hendricks, a law enforcement veteran with nearly two decades of experience. Keven specializes in dark web investigations, particularly in tracking narcotics-related activities, and leads initiatives aimed at disrupting dark web drug markets. He will be joined by Nitish Chandan, a Maltego Subject Matter Expert, to demonstrate how investigators can use Maltego to uncover who is selling what and who is behind online markets, whether on the dark web or social media.
